Why Your Pool Screen Rescreen Sagged or Failed Early

A properly installed pool screen panel should stay drum-tight for years, not months. If a rescreen you paid for is already sagging, rippling, or pulling loose at the corners within the first year, something in the original installation went wrong. Here are the most common causes we see when we are called out to fix another contractor's recent work.

The spline was reused or too small

Spline is the rubber cord that presses screen mesh into the aluminum channel around each panel. It is inexpensive, which is exactly why reusing old spline instead of installing new spline on every panel is one of the most common shortcuts in the industry. Old spline loses its grip and shrinks over time, so mesh held in with reused spline will loosen within months even if the install looked tight on day one. It also matters if the spline diameter matches the channel; using cord that is too small for the groove leaves the screen under-tensioned from day one.

The frame was not checked before the mesh went in

If the aluminum channel around a panel is bent, twisted, or corroded, new mesh installed into that channel will never sit flat, no matter how tight the spline is rolled in. A bowed frame section stretches the mesh unevenly, and that uneven tension is what causes visible sagging or rippling weeks after installation. The mesh was cut too small or stretched improperly

Screen mesh needs to be cut with enough overlap to be pulled taut during installation, then trimmed after the spline is set. A rushed installer who cuts mesh too close to the frame, or who does not pull consistent tension across the whole panel while rolling in the spline, ends up with a panel that looks fine at first but loosens as the mesh settles and the Florida heat expands and contracts the aluminum frame daily.
